- ItemCauses of High Infant Mortality Rate in Kacheliba Town Council North Pokot District.(Kampala International University, College of Education, Open and Distance Learning., 2014-12) Andiema, Bruno ChesariaThere has been high expenditure by the government and Non Governmental Organizations on maternal mortality rate as a way to reduce maternal mortality rate. As a result, I investigated the impact of maternal mortality rate in North Pokot District. The study involved both quantitative and qualitative methods. The technique sampling was also used to collect the data with a sample size of 50 respondents. The instruments of data collection included, self administered questionnaires, focused group discussions and interviewing. From the study findings, it shows that the causes of natural disasters include, limited sensitization, poor farming methods, high population growth rates, cutting of tree. It was also found out that the impacts of natural disasters includes, destruction of infrastructures ,destruction of properties ,diseases outbreak, death of people. The solutions of natural disasters include, planting of trees in hilly areas, improve infrastructures, increase awareness and sensitization, resettling of people to other areas. The conclusions includes, existence of a pre-disaster social protection system, quick policy responses and innovative approaches in both financing and delivery of social protection farmers, reallocating the local government personnel and local cadres, severely damaged social protection institutions have restored functionality in a very short period of time by intensifying the use of surviving resources, there can be lack of personnel and lack of communication and transportation means for social protection agencies to perform normally, the government should address those concerns including corruption and misallocation of resources meant for the disasters.

- ItemDeterminants of academic performance in English language within the selected secondary schools of Kikuyu Division, Kiambu District, Kenya(Kampala International University.College of Education, 2009-11) Winnie, Nyawira KamauThe purpose of this study was to investigate the factors affecting the academic performance of the English language in the selected schools of Kikuyu Division Kiambu District. The specific objectives of the study were to determine if discipline affects the students' academic performance of the English language in the selected schools of Kikuyu Division, to determine if teacher qualities affect the students' academic performance of the English language in the selected schools of Kikuyu Division; and to determine if school facilities affect the students' academic performance of the English language in the selected schools of Kikuyu Division. The methods used for data collection was questionnaires and interview guides to students, teachers and head teachers of the schools involved in the study. In chapter four, the findings were presented and interpreted in relation to the study objectives and research questions. While linking to the existing literature, results included demographic characteristics, frequency and percentages. Based on the findings it was observed that teacher qualities, discipline of students; and school facilities have a direct impact on the students' academic performance. In chapter five, development of solutions to the problem, summary of the findings and conclusions were attempted. The findings suggested recommendations that the Government should provide more teaching learning facilities in schools to make the learning environment more attractive to students and teachers among other recommendations.

- ItemThe effects of indiscipline on Students Academic Performance in Shanamu, Bombo High School,Gangama,Parish, Luwero District.(Kampala International University, College of Education, Open and Distance Learning., 2009-08) Namuli, AminaThe study seeks to determine the relationship between indiscipline and academic performance of pupils in Shanamu, Bombo High school, Gangama, Parish, Luwero district The specific objectives of the study were to determine the impact of Jndiscipline on the academic performance of students, investigate the causes of indiscipline by secondary students in Shanamu, Bombo High school, Gangama, Parish, Luwero district Uganda. And Identify solutions to the problem of school discipline. The methods used for data collection were questionnaires to the pupils and interviews with the teachers. The study revealed that indiscipline pupils do not excel in academics. Poverty, ban of corporal punishment, large classes and lack of parent's ability to discipline their children were mentioned as the major causes of indiscipline. The study recommended that School authorities and teachers should identify the reasons for children's misbehavior and therefore deal with the problem. Parents and teachers should work hand in hand to discipline children. Parents should realize that they play a bigger part in disciplining their children. Effective and less violent means of disciplining children should be devised. For example schools should make sure they have counseling services to help such children.

- ItemHIV/ AIDS and dropout rates of pupils of selected primary schools in Muranga district, Kenya(Kampala International University, College of Education, Open and Distance Learning, 2007-11) Githinji Bundi, PiusThe study was about the effect of HIV/ AIDS on dropout rates of selected primary school in Muranga district, Kenya. The major respondents were parents, orphans, class teachers and head teachers of the selected primary schools. Questionnaires were issued to ten parents from each school selected at random. Schedules were issued to class teachers through the head teachers. Head teachers and known orphans were interviewed for more information. The questionnaires, schedule and interviews were primarily based on the objective of the study. The major objective was to determine the influence of HIV/ AIDS orphans on dropout rates. Major findings show that despite the fact that there are many orphans dropout rates have significantly increased due to HIV/AIDS. Recommendations made from the study were strengthened support mechanism, allocating funds to the extended families and more counseling services. From the study it can be concluded that HIV/AIDS has not led to a significant increase in dropout rates of boys and girls in Muranga district.
- ItemImmunization and infant mortality rate in lira district: A case study of Lira Regional Referral Hospital(College of Humanities and Social Sciences, 2011-10) Manana, Loyce KusoloInfant mortality rate has continued to be a threat even with the drive towards modernization of the economy. Despite all the attention and efforts to curb down causes of infant mortality by government, the incidents are still many. The purpose of the study was to examine the influence of immunization on infant mortality rate in Lira. The study was conducted through case study design. It investigated the relationship between immunization and infant mortality rate. This study design was selected because it enabled the researcher study smaller sample in depth analysis by the researcher. Case studies generally entail extensive and holistic analysis. The study was conducted in Lira Regional Referral Hospital and central division in Lira district in Northern Uganda. Lira borders Kole, Oyam, Dokolo and Alebtong districts. Lira district was selected because it is among one of the districts not doing well in immunization and the infant mortality rate is high. The research findings report confirms that: - All vaccines and equipment used for immunization are being stored according to manufacturers instructions; The fridge temperature are being controlled between +2 - +8°C; Temperature charting are being done twice a day; The Decision whether to discard the vaccine after the session depends on the condition at which its kept; All caretaker/mothers must be communicated the possible effects of each vaccine; Caretakers/mothers should be communicated the next date of return for the next doze and vaccine From the findings, the following recommendations can be made: - Health workers who manage and handle immunization should be train; More staff should be recruited and trained to handle and manage immunization sessions; Immunization training should be incorporated into the health workers training curriculum; The caretakers/community should be sensitized on the importance of immunization to reduce ignorance; There should be prompt submission of monthly, quarterly and annual report by HMIS for proper planning by government.
- ItemThe impact of guidance and counselling on academic performance of mentally challenged children in Nyeri municipality in Nyeri district Kenya(Kampala International University, College of Education, Open and Distance Learning, 2009-12) Gachuiri Kabera, GeraldThe purpose of the study was to investigate the Influence of Guidance and Counseling on Academic Performance of Mentally Challenged Children in Nyeri municipality in Nyeri District, Kenya. The specific objectives of the study were to; identify the causes of mental retardation Children in Nyeri municipality in Nyeri District Kenya, , Identify the methods of counseling that are effective on mentally retarded Children and Investigate the impact of guidance and counseling on academic performance of learners with mental retardation Children. The methods used for data collection were questionnaires to the teachers, interviews with the parents and focus group discussions with the pupils. The study revealed by 60% that learners with mental retardation sought guidance and counseling services. However the respondents complained that most schools do not have qualified counselors to handle mentally retarded learners. The most common mentioned cause of mental retardation was hereditary reasons which were mentioned by 90% of the respondents. Group counseling was mentioned by 84%, 76% mentioned individual counseling, 72% mentioned motivation, 64% mentioned parent and child counseling and 56% mentioned behavior counseling. The study also revealed by 52% of the respondents that guidance and counseling has improved the academic performance of mentally retarded. The study recommended that; Counselors who specifically look at cases of mentally retarded learners should be trained and made available in schools to help mentally retarded children. The Ministry of Education to beef up more aggressive awareness campaigns among various stakeholders concerning the negative attitudes towards the mentally retarded. The Ministry to empower all the teachers in the country with appropriate professional skills on how to cater for the mentally retarded learners.
- ItemImpact of non-governmental organizations on women's ability to cope with problems: a case of Action for Development (ACFODE) Kitoba division - Mpigi district(Kampala International University, College of Education, Open and Distance Learning, 2009-06) Nabakooza, PhinaThe study examined the impact of Non-Governmental Organizations Women ability to cope up with problems. The study was carried out in Kitoba sub county Mpigi district. The study was carried out under the following objectives finding out the problems faced by women, finding out the services offered to women by NGOs and how accessible they are, finding out the challenges faced by Action for development in their service delivery and the impact of NGOs on women's ability to cope with problems. A sample of 60 was included in the study. The study employed observation, in-depth interviews, and documentary as the method of data collection. The findings revealed that the female were the most respondents with 65% because they knew best how the NGO had helped them to catch up with their problems. The male came next as they could also give their ideas about how the women had improved their lives. Between the ages of 20 - 25, were the most study respondents because these were still young women who may organizations intervention, 26-30 age bracket came next followed by 30 - 45 and the last was 46 - 50 were the last category. The education levels showed that most respondents studied up to the institution level, few of the staffs had been to the university. According to the researcher's findings, HIV AIDS was the most problem that the women faced; poverty came next followed by divorce with 22%. Domestic violence with 15% and the last was Gender inequality with 4%, credit or loan schemes came next, Guidance and counseling followed and the last was adult education so as to teach these women on how to cope up. Basing on the findings about the challenges faced by the NGO, it was found out that financial was the most with 30% followed by Area of coverage in fluxing number of beneficiaries had also proved a problem. The last problem was the lack of community support which hindered the provision of services.

Specific objectives of the study were to: Investigate the Psychological effects of post election violence on learners, determine the Effects of post election violence on the quality of teachers, investigate the Effects of post election violence on school infrastructure and school resources, determine Post election violence and school drop out and determine the Effects of post election violence on the quality of education. The methods used for data collection were questionnaires to the teachers, interviews with the pupils and focus group discussions with the community members. The findings revealed by 44% of the respondents that post election violence leads to trauma in children, another 40% of the respondents strongly agreed that post election violence leads to children being withdrawn and 46% of the respondents agreed that Post election violence has led to memory impairment in children 40% of the respondents strongly agreed that Post election violence has led to shortage of teachers in some areas. 60% of the respondents strongly agreed that many schools were burnt down in the post election violence 60% of the respondents strongly agreed that some learners lost their parents and hence dropped out of school. 30% of the respondents strongly agreed that teachers are few due to post election violence which affects the quality of education, 46% of the respondents strongly agreed that Schools do not have enough learning materials and hence quality of education is jeopardized and 36% of the respondents strongly agreed that Schools do not have enough learning materials and hence quality of education is jeopardized The study recommended that: Government, non government organizations and schools should come out and help children who _have suffered psychologically by availing counseling services in schools and the community at large. Government, non government organizations and the community should come together and rebuild schools and avail learning resources that were destroyed during post election violence so that children have where to study from. Setting up of education insurance for the children especially those who were orphaned due to post election violence.

It was guided by three objectives; establish how mother tongue affects the performance of learners in written English in Kakira Town Council, to find out the effects of mother tongue on the performance of learners in written English in Kakira Town Council primary schools and to analyse the strategies to minimize mother tongue affects on the performance in English in Kakira Town Council primary schools. The study was carried from July to September 2011, it was descriptive where a sample of 50 respondents and the data collected was processed and recommendations were made and conclusion drawn. It was found out that there is a very big significant relationship between mother tongue interference and learners' performance in written English at primary level. Lusoga was found to be having an impact on learner's performance in English.

- ItemLearning styles utilized by the gifted and talented students in selected schools in Teso District-Kenya(Kampala International University, College of Education, Open and Distance Learning, 2009-08) Byochiko, FrancisThis study was carried to investigate the learning styles utilized by the gifted and talented students in selected school in Teso district- Kenya. Data was collected through the use of interviews accompanied by observation and questionnaires. The study involved a sample of 40 respondents that is 12 teachers and 28 students from Kamunuoit Primary school; these were all involved in the school's curriculum activities at different levels. The study found that students who are gifted and talented in selected school perform better than those who are not, since they are able to understand first and they do not waste time for teachers as in explaining to th,em detailed compared to the ones who are not gifted and talented who are provided with learning resources like; abacus, counting sticks among other. It was concluded that gifted and talented students in selected school have got higher opportunities for performing well compared to the ones who are not gifted and talented because they have different Intelligence Quotient (I.Q). Finally, a number of recommendations were made like; teachers and parents should educate their children especially the ones who are not gifted and talented in order to increase on their levels of performance in class work. Let them know about the academic performance among pupils has an impact on their future career, which may result into improved standards of livings.
- ItemParental separation and child upbringing among families of Adjumani town council-Adjumani district(Kampala International University, College of Education, Open and Distance Learning, 2016-09) Adui, EmmanuelThe study was set to examine the effect of parental separation and child upbringing in selected families of Adjumani Town Council -Adjumani District. The study had three specific objectives i) to examine the consequences of parental separation on health of children of selected families of Adjumani Town Council-Adjumani District, ii) to examine the effects of parental separation on education and morals of children of selected families of Adjumani Town Council –Adjumani District and to examine the relationship between parental separation and child upbringing of selected families of Adjumani Town Council -Adjumani District. This study employed the descriptive survey design specifically the descriptive correlational and causal design strategies. Questionnaire of four likert scale namely strongly disagree, disagree, agree and strongly agree. The findings indicated that most respondents were female (56%), between 40-49 years of age, and majority were master holders (38%) confirming high level of education.The consequences of parental separation on health of children of selected families of Adjumani Town Council - Adjumani District is generally high and this was indicated by the average mean of 2.69. The effects of parental separation on education and morals of children of selected families of Adjumani Town Council -Adjumani District with 2.597 on average was generally high. From the findings and the conclusions of the study, the researcher recommends there is need help parents understand the effect of separation on children emotionally ii)Children should be sensitized on the effect of drug abuse on their lives, family and community, iii) More research on women should be conducted causal of parental separation. This will help to come up with solutions to parents who have marital problems, iv) Families with marital problems are required to go for counseling and resolve their issues without separation hence leaving the children) Children need to be assured of their provision of the basic needs with divorce or separation has occurred and despite of all these challenges, parents provide for their children even when separation or divorce has occurred
