- ItemHIV/ AIDS and dropout rates of pupils of selected primary schools in Muranga district, Kenya(Kampala International University, College of Education, Open and Distance Learning, 2007-11) Githinji Bundi, PiusThe study was about the effect of HIV/ AIDS on dropout rates of selected primary school in Muranga district, Kenya. The major respondents were parents, orphans, class teachers and head teachers of the selected primary schools. Questionnaires were issued to ten parents from each school selected at random. Schedules were issued to class teachers through the head teachers. Head teachers and known orphans were interviewed for more information. The questionnaires, schedule and interviews were primarily based on the objective of the study. The major objective was to determine the influence of HIV/ AIDS orphans on dropout rates. Major findings show that despite the fact that there are many orphans dropout rates have significantly increased due to HIV/AIDS. Recommendations made from the study were strengthened support mechanism, allocating funds to the extended families and more counseling services. From the study it can be concluded that HIV/AIDS has not led to a significant increase in dropout rates of boys and girls in Muranga district.

- ItemThe relationship between pupil’s discipline and academic performance in selected primary schools in Oljoro-Orok division of Nyandarua district, in Kenya(Kampala International University, College of Education, Open and Distance Learning, 2008-04) M. Wanjohi, LukeIt is generally agreed that discipline and academic performance go hand in hand. In Oljoro-orok Division in Nyandarua District, Kenya for quite some time, the academic performance of the pupils at primary 7 and 8 levels has been declining. The purpose of the study was to investigate the relationship between pupils' discipline and academic performance in selected primary schools in Oljoro-orok Division of Nyandarua District in Kenya. The research was carried out in 5 selected primary schools in Oljoro-orok Division in Nyarndarua District, Kenya. The method used •was random san1pling of pupils and purposive sampling for the teachers. Research instruments used included interview schedules, questionnaires and observation schedule. The research findings were that school rules and regulations exist in schools but are not strictly followed by all the pupils. Majority of teachers from selected schools were concerned with instilling and maintaining discipline. The general performance in these schools, Gatimu primary, Inoro primary and Weru primary was higher than in those schools, Oljoro-orok primary and Kinna primary where teachers were less concerned in instilling and maintaining discipline. If promotions to the next class are based on academic performance, dedication to studies was observed. Punishments are not properly and effectively used in schools. Teacher’s supervision and concern is important for discipline. Guidance and counseling in schools requires proper implementation and its effective use.

It is now well recognized that the many problems in schools and colleges point to the serious ineffectiveness of Guidance and counseling services. The present study therefore recognizes that one factor in the provision of Guidance and counseling services is how effective the programmes are. The study will find out the impact on these programmes in selected secondary schools in Rongo Division of Migori District in Kenya. The stud~ will collect data in the form of students responses to questionnaires/ teachers responses to questionnaires and teacher interview responses. In addition to these/ the researcher intends to observe a few counseling sessions and to check cumulative records of the students. Using percentages and tables_, the researcher will carry out descriptive analysis of data. From the study/ the researcher hopes to find out and give useful explanation of what is actually happening in schools concerning the provisions of Guidance and counseling programmes.
- ItemWar Crime and House Hold Income in Ogur Sub County, Erute North, Lira District.(Kampala International University, College of Education, Open and Distance Learning., 2008-10) Alele, Tom RichardThis research is about War Crimes and house hold income in Ogur Sub County. This area was gripped in what it was set to be until recently when a peace agreement has been negotiated between the government of Uganda and the LRA rebels. the Uganda government has been on many occasions inherently unjust, repressive and extremely violent against certain section of its citizens particularly those in Northern Uganda. This explains why a section of people took arms against it. There were diverse root causes of the conflict, which stretched deep into history of the country. This paper therefore sets out to investigate people's views to find out the War Crimes and house hold income on the people of Ogur Sub County in Lira district. Field research was carried out using interviews and questionnaires among the former combatants, Indigenous people, local councilors and district administrative officers. Women and men from the whole Sub-county between the ages of 15 and 85 were used in the research. The tabulated and analyzed results showed people had a ve1y negative attitude towards War Crimes and its effect on house hold income and therefore readily supported :·econciliation and peace agreement which was finally begun in 2002 between the 5overnment of republic of Uganda and the dominant rebel group of LRA in northern Jganda. :his peace agreement was considered valuable and genuine because it will address the oot causes, War crimes on the people of Ogur Sub County and it is expected to have ational and regional guarantee that if it could fully be implemented it would give rospect of lasting peace in the area. The findings acknowledged that the government has big challenge of limited resources a head to achieve sustainable development in )rthern Uganda because of serious War Crimes that were committed.

The specific objectives of the study were to determine; if Poor Physical Facilities affects the implementation of free primary education in Ruiru Division, if Quality of Education affects the implementation of free primary education, if Lack of enough Trained Teachers affects the implementation of free primary education, if Big Pupil-Teacher Ratio affects the implementation of free primary education and to determine if High poverty levels of Kenyans affects the implementation of free primary education in Ruiru Division The methods used for data collection were questionnaires to the teachers and focus group discussion with the pupils The study revealed that Poor Physical Facilities (30%) Quality of Education (50%), Lack of enough Trained Teachers (25%), Pupil-Teacher Ratio (33%), and High poverty levels of Kenyans (42%) are the factors affecting the implementation of free primary education in Kenya The Study recommended that there should be empowerment of education committees at the village level so that there is efficient monitoring of the implementation of the free primary education. Since district education officers are poorly facilitated they cannot follow up on the implementation at the lower levels
- ItemImpact of non-governmental organizations on women's ability to cope with problems: a case of Action for Development (ACFODE) Kitoba division - Mpigi district(Kampala International University, College of Education, Open and Distance Learning, 2009-06) Nabakooza, PhinaThe study examined the impact of Non-Governmental Organizations Women ability to cope up with problems. The study was carried out in Kitoba sub county Mpigi district. The study was carried out under the following objectives finding out the problems faced by women, finding out the services offered to women by NGOs and how accessible they are, finding out the challenges faced by Action for development in their service delivery and the impact of NGOs on women's ability to cope with problems. A sample of 60 was included in the study. The study employed observation, in-depth interviews, and documentary as the method of data collection. The findings revealed that the female were the most respondents with 65% because they knew best how the NGO had helped them to catch up with their problems. The male came next as they could also give their ideas about how the women had improved their lives. Between the ages of 20 - 25, were the most study respondents because these were still young women who may organizations intervention, 26-30 age bracket came next followed by 30 - 45 and the last was 46 - 50 were the last category. The education levels showed that most respondents studied up to the institution level, few of the staffs had been to the university. According to the researcher's findings, HIV AIDS was the most problem that the women faced; poverty came next followed by divorce with 22%. Domestic violence with 15% and the last was Gender inequality with 4%, credit or loan schemes came next, Guidance and counseling followed and the last was adult education so as to teach these women on how to cope up. Basing on the findings about the challenges faced by the NGO, it was found out that financial was the most with 30% followed by Area of coverage in fluxing number of beneficiaries had also proved a problem. The last problem was the lack of community support which hindered the provision of services.

- ItemLearning styles utilized by the gifted and talented students in selected schools in Teso District-Kenya(Kampala International University, College of Education, Open and Distance Learning, 2009-08) Byochiko, FrancisThis study was carried to investigate the learning styles utilized by the gifted and talented students in selected school in Teso district- Kenya. Data was collected through the use of interviews accompanied by observation and questionnaires. The study involved a sample of 40 respondents that is 12 teachers and 28 students from Kamunuoit Primary school; these were all involved in the school's curriculum activities at different levels. The study found that students who are gifted and talented in selected school perform better than those who are not, since they are able to understand first and they do not waste time for teachers as in explaining to th,em detailed compared to the ones who are not gifted and talented who are provided with learning resources like; abacus, counting sticks among other. It was concluded that gifted and talented students in selected school have got higher opportunities for performing well compared to the ones who are not gifted and talented because they have different Intelligence Quotient (I.Q). Finally, a number of recommendations were made like; teachers and parents should educate their children especially the ones who are not gifted and talented in order to increase on their levels of performance in class work. Let them know about the academic performance among pupils has an impact on their future career, which may result into improved standards of livings.
- ItemThe effects of indiscipline on Students Academic Performance in Shanamu, Bombo High School,Gangama,Parish, Luwero District.(Kampala International University, College of Education, Open and Distance Learning., 2009-08) Namuli, AminaThe study seeks to determine the relationship between indiscipline and academic performance of pupils in Shanamu, Bombo High school, Gangama, Parish, Luwero district The specific objectives of the study were to determine the impact of Jndiscipline on the academic performance of students, investigate the causes of indiscipline by secondary students in Shanamu, Bombo High school, Gangama, Parish, Luwero district Uganda. And Identify solutions to the problem of school discipline. The methods used for data collection were questionnaires to the pupils and interviews with the teachers. The study revealed that indiscipline pupils do not excel in academics. Poverty, ban of corporal punishment, large classes and lack of parent's ability to discipline their children were mentioned as the major causes of indiscipline. The study recommended that School authorities and teachers should identify the reasons for children's misbehavior and therefore deal with the problem. Parents and teachers should work hand in hand to discipline children. Parents should realize that they play a bigger part in disciplining their children. Effective and less violent means of disciplining children should be devised. For example schools should make sure they have counseling services to help such children.

Specific objectives of the study were to: Investigate the Psychological effects of post election violence on learners, determine the Effects of post election violence on the quality of teachers, investigate the Effects of post election violence on school infrastructure and school resources, determine Post election violence and school drop out and determine the Effects of post election violence on the quality of education. The methods used for data collection were questionnaires to the teachers, interviews with the pupils and focus group discussions with the community members. The findings revealed by 44% of the respondents that post election violence leads to trauma in children, another 40% of the respondents strongly agreed that post election violence leads to children being withdrawn and 46% of the respondents agreed that Post election violence has led to memory impairment in children 40% of the respondents strongly agreed that Post election violence has led to shortage of teachers in some areas. 60% of the respondents strongly agreed that many schools were burnt down in the post election violence 60% of the respondents strongly agreed that some learners lost their parents and hence dropped out of school. 30% of the respondents strongly agreed that teachers are few due to post election violence which affects the quality of education, 46% of the respondents strongly agreed that Schools do not have enough learning materials and hence quality of education is jeopardized and 36% of the respondents strongly agreed that Schools do not have enough learning materials and hence quality of education is jeopardized The study recommended that: Government, non government organizations and schools should come out and help children who _have suffered psychologically by availing counseling services in schools and the community at large. Government, non government organizations and the community should come together and rebuild schools and avail learning resources that were destroyed during post election violence so that children have where to study from. Setting up of education insurance for the children especially those who were orphaned due to post election violence.
- ItemThe role of guidance and counselling in addressing issues of street children in Uganda In Kampala Central Division(Kampala International University, College of Education, Open and Distance Learning, 2009-11) Bosibana, Barbara WinfredThe major objective of the study was to identify the role of guidance and counselling and the trends of children on the streets in Kampala. Then study used both quantitative and qualitative data collection methods, in which questionnaires and interview guide were used to collect data from the respondents. Research question one sought to find out the factors responsible for the high number of street children in Kampala. The study findings revealed that; lack of school fees, divorce, parent illness, hunger, sexual abuse, insecurity, lack of scholastic materials and behavioural issues of parents were the factors identified. Research question two sought to find out why street children are in streets and the study found that; war, search for money, born on the streets, family conflicts, peer pressure, looking for support, no reason, sexual abuse, loss of guardian, and mistreatment at home were factors given. Research question three sought to find out the types of advices given to the children by their parents. The study findings revealed that; respects, how to be good children, survival, no stealing, working hard, appreciation, and approaching people were the answers given.
- ItemDeterminants of academic performance in English language within the selected secondary schools of Kikuyu Division, Kiambu District, Kenya(Kampala International University.College of Education, 2009-11) Winnie, Nyawira KamauThe purpose of this study was to investigate the factors affecting the academic performance of the English language in the selected schools of Kikuyu Division Kiambu District. The specific objectives of the study were to determine if discipline affects the students' academic performance of the English language in the selected schools of Kikuyu Division, to determine if teacher qualities affect the students' academic performance of the English language in the selected schools of Kikuyu Division; and to determine if school facilities affect the students' academic performance of the English language in the selected schools of Kikuyu Division. The methods used for data collection was questionnaires and interview guides to students, teachers and head teachers of the schools involved in the study. In chapter four, the findings were presented and interpreted in relation to the study objectives and research questions. While linking to the existing literature, results included demographic characteristics, frequency and percentages. Based on the findings it was observed that teacher qualities, discipline of students; and school facilities have a direct impact on the students' academic performance. In chapter five, development of solutions to the problem, summary of the findings and conclusions were attempted. The findings suggested recommendations that the Government should provide more teaching learning facilities in schools to make the learning environment more attractive to students and teachers among other recommendations.

- ItemThe impact of guidance and counselling on academic performance of mentally challenged children in Nyeri municipality in Nyeri district Kenya(Kampala International University, College of Education, Open and Distance Learning, 2009-12) Gachuiri Kabera, GeraldThe purpose of the study was to investigate the Influence of Guidance and Counseling on Academic Performance of Mentally Challenged Children in Nyeri municipality in Nyeri District, Kenya. The specific objectives of the study were to; identify the causes of mental retardation Children in Nyeri municipality in Nyeri District Kenya, , Identify the methods of counseling that are effective on mentally retarded Children and Investigate the impact of guidance and counseling on academic performance of learners with mental retardation Children. The methods used for data collection were questionnaires to the teachers, interviews with the parents and focus group discussions with the pupils. The study revealed by 60% that learners with mental retardation sought guidance and counseling services. However the respondents complained that most schools do not have qualified counselors to handle mentally retarded learners. The most common mentioned cause of mental retardation was hereditary reasons which were mentioned by 90% of the respondents. Group counseling was mentioned by 84%, 76% mentioned individual counseling, 72% mentioned motivation, 64% mentioned parent and child counseling and 56% mentioned behavior counseling. The study also revealed by 52% of the respondents that guidance and counseling has improved the academic performance of mentally retarded. The study recommended that; Counselors who specifically look at cases of mentally retarded learners should be trained and made available in schools to help mentally retarded children. The Ministry of Education to beef up more aggressive awareness campaigns among various stakeholders concerning the negative attitudes towards the mentally retarded. The Ministry to empower all the teachers in the country with appropriate professional skills on how to cater for the mentally retarded learners.

- ItemStigma and Discrimination of People Living With HIV/AIDS in Bunyaruguru County, Bushenyi District, Uganda.(Kampala International University, College of Education, Open and Distance Learning., 2010-07) Tumusiime, PaulThe purpose of this research study was to The overall objective of this study was to examine whether people living with HIV/AIDS in Bunyaruguru county Bushenyi District are subject to discrimination and if so, what influence does it have on their possibilities to enjoy their human right to health. The objectives of the study were determine if the HIV/AIDS-positive people in Tororo District are discriminated in their closest social context, determine the ways in which HIV/AIDS-positive people in Tororo District are subject to discrimination; to determine how discrimination affect their possibilities to maintain a good health . The methods used for data collection were questionnaires to the HIV positive people. The findings indicate that many cases of discrimination have occurred in the health sector. However, despite this, many interviewees still had faith in the public health care system. They believed that the services in the Infectious Diseases Hospital (IDH) and Ward 33 of the General Hospital were good, and that they were treated well. A few agreed that free health care provided by Government hospitals gave people who could not afford private health care access to treatment they would otherwise be denied. However, there was much consensus that awareness among health staff, in public and private hospitals, must be addressed. They brought up several instances where health staff including doctors, nurses, attendants and minor staff had discriminated against people living with HIV/AIDS and their families. The study recommended that MOH needs to deliver a strong message to all health care workers that people living with HIV/AIDS and their families are to be treated with respect and professionalism. This message should be backed up with training programmes for health care staff, new recruits and health administrators, at the national and regional levels
