- ItemThe role of parents on pupils’ academic performance in public primary schools in Bubaare Sub Country, Mbarara District, Uganda(Kampala International University, 2023-10) Muhwezi DeoPurpose: This study sought to examine the relationship between role of parents and pupils academic performance in public primary schools in Bubaare sub county Mbarara District. Objectives: The study had the following objectives; to investigate the influence of parent‟s participation in school meetings, assess the influence of parent payment of facilitation fees and examine the influence of parents‟ provision of scholastic materials on pupils‟ academic performance in public primary schools in Mbarara District. Methodology: A cross sectional survey design was adopted for this study. The study focused on 121 participants including teachers, SMC & PTA, and representatives from the Ministry of Education and Sports and School administrators out of 154 total population.in Bubaare Sub County Mbarara District. A sample of 121 respondents was determined using the table of Krejcie & Morgan (1970). This study employed both quantitative and qualitative methods of data collection that included the questionnaire and interviews. Quantitative data was analyzed using SPSS unlike qualitative data was analyzed using descriptive statistics like frequencies, proportions, means, standard deviations, and Pearson's correlation coefficient shall be employed, as well as inferential statistics. Findings: From the findings, majority of the teaching staff (67.8%) agreed with the statement that “parents show love to their children”. Responses on the statement, “Parents participate in meetings every year”, were as follows; 75% (45) of the respondents agreed with the statement, 11.7% (7) were not sure and 13.4% (8) of the respondents disagreed with the statement while mean was 3.87 and standard deviation was 1.142 which means that majority of respondents agreed with the statement since mean was above 3.0. The findings shows adjusted R2 value of 0.320 between parents‟ participation in meetings and academic performance which is suggesting that parenting alone predicted 32% (0.320 * 100) of the variance in academic performance. Conclusions: This study concluded that good learning environment positively influences academic performance. This study concluded that schools are not providing enough learning materials. Recommendations: The researcher recommended that parents should ensure that their children get balanced diet. The researcher also recommended that parents regularly should check on their children‟s discipline and should not wait when their children are suspended from school.
- ItemEthical Leadership and Job Performance of Teachers in Secondary Schools in Kyabugimbi Sub-County, Bushenyi District, Uganda(Kampala International University, 2019-10) Benon Tumwesigye MujuniThis study analyzed the relationship between ethical leadership and job performance of teachers in secondary schools in Kyabugimbi Sub-County, Bushenyi District. The specific objectives of the study were to examine the relationship between ethical guidance and job performance of teachers; to assess the relationship between power sharing and job performance of teachers; and to evaluate the relationship between the integrity of head teachers and job performance of teachers in Secondary schools in Bushenyi District. The study adopted a cross-sectional survey research design on a sample of 124 respondents. Data was collected using a questionnaire survey and an interview guide. Quantitative data were analysed using frequencies, percentages means, correlation and regression. Qualitative data were analysed using content analysis. The results revealed that performance of teachers, head teachers providing of ethical guidance, ensuring of power sharing and personal integrity were good. Inferential results revealed that ethical guidance, power sharing and integrity had a positive and significant influence on job performance of teachers. It was concluded that ethical guidance by head teachers is a pre-requisite for job performance of teachers, power sharing in schools is imperative for job performance of teachers, and integrity of head teachers is paramount for job performance of teachers. It was thus recommended that head teachers in secondary schools should offer ethical guidance in administration of schools, promote power sharingand exhibit integrity in their administration.
- ItemTeacher characteristics and use of ICT in the teaching - learning in Secondary Schools of Mpondwe Lhubiriha Town Council, Kasese District-Western Uganda(Kampala International University, 2021-04) Ashirafu Masudi KuleThis study investigated the relationship between teachers’ characteristics and their use of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) in teaching and learning in secondary schools in Mpondwe Lhubiriha Town Council in Kasese District, Uganda. Specifically, the study examined whether teacher characteristics namely; teachers perceived usefulness of ICT, perceived ease of use of ICT and teacher ICT competence influenced their use of ICT in teaching and learning. This study adopted the correlational research design on a sample of 127 secondary school teachers. Data was collected using a self-administered questionnaire and analyzed using Statistical Package for Social Scientists (SPSS). At univariate level, descriptive statistics: frequencies mean and standard deviation were used while at bivariate level, inferential statistics: correlation and regression were used. Descriptive results revealed that teachers rated their use of ICT and perceived competence as poor, and rated usefulness of ICT as good and their use of ICT as fair. Regression analysis revealed that perceived usefulness, perceived ease of use and ICT competences had a positive and significant influence on use of ICT in teaching learning. It was concluded that perceived usefulness is a prerequisite for teachers’ use of ICT, perceived ease of use is imperative for use of ICT and competences are essential for use of ICT. Therefore, it was recommended that the Ministry of Education and head teachers should provide awareness trainings to teachers about the usefulness of ICT. The Ministry of Education and Schools should train teachers on the use of ICT and develop their ICT competences.
- ItemSocio-Economic Status of Parents and Academic Performance of Learners in Primary Schools in Ibanda Municipality(Kampala International University, 2019-11) Peter Nsiimire MwesigyeThis study was conducted to investigate the difference in academic performance of learners in primary schools across socio-economic status (SES) of parents in Ibanda Municipality. Data were collected from pupils in Primary Six and Primary Seven using questionnaires while data from teachers, head teachers and parents were obtained using interview guides. Descriptive statistics including frequency counts and percentages were used to indicate the characteristics of students and SES of their parents. One way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) was used to determine whether SES of parents led differences in academic performance of learners. The findings showed that there was statistically significant difference in academic performance among primary school pupils of parents whose parents had secondary education and above education (p = 0.046) but not occupation of parents (p = 0.881) and income of parents (p = 0.744). From the findings, it was shown that the difference in academic performance of learners is greatly determined by education of parents as one of the proxy measures to SES and thus strategies geared towards raising education of parents such as adult learning programs are recommended in Ibanda Municipality and beyond.
- ItemParticipatory management and performance of school administration in the protestant church founded secondary schools in Karongi District/Rwanda(Kampala International University, 2013-09) Rutigerera Zikama ZacharieThe purpose of this study was to investigate how participatory management affects performance of school administration in protestant church founded secondary schools in Karongi District. The study used the descriptive survey design. The sample size for the study was 378 students, 78 teachers, 8 principals, and 16 parents. The primary data was collected using questionnaires. The data on the Likert scale type data as performed in analysis gave the answer for all stakeholders involved in this research. In overall, the findings revealed that the participatory management in administration of all stakeholders was low. The correlation test between School administration performance and the participatory management by Spearman's rank correlation coefficient was 0.67 computed by SPSS (table 4.18) which was greater than the level of significance of 0.05, meaning that there is a significant correlation between participatory management and school administration. The effect of participatory management on performance of school administration in selected protestant founded secondary schools in Karongi district has been determined and reported limited success in school administration due to the low status of the participatory management. The relationship between participatory management and performance of school administration has been established. However, the remaining correlation part is being held by some other extraneous variables like: environment safety, encouragement, acknowledgment and positive attitude. The importance of in-service training in the improvement of school administration in selected protestant church founded secondary schools in Karongi district has been determined and reported limited success in school administration due to the low status of consideration and the participatory management. As a result, the study recommended the policy makers and the Ministry of Education to organize training for all stakeholders on participatory management and empower them. School principals are recommended to undergo training programs or in-service training for participatory management purposes to enhance their leadership capacity and to carry out their responsibilities effectively. The contribution of the researchers‟ study to the existing knowledge concerned the involvement of all stakeholders on performance of school administration in protestant church founded secondary schools. This has generated empirical data on the subject of participatory management and performance of school administration.
