- ItemAbsenteeism as a silent factor to the declining Universal Secondary Education policy in Uganda: a case study of Nabigasa Sub-county Rakai District(Kampala International University, College of Education, 2016-09) Evalisto, LukaagaEducation has a huge impact on any human society and it can safely be assumed that no society is optimally functioning until it is properly educated. In the global perspective, it is an undeniable fact that the progress of a nation is very much dependent on the education of its citizens. Similarly, in Uganda education is a fundamental human right and it is the duty of the state to promote free and compulsory education to the citizens. This constitutional mandate gave birth to free education from primary to secondary under Universal Primary Education (UPE) and Universal Secondary Education (USE) since 1997 and 2007 respectively. The purpose of this study was to investigate the major causes of students’ absenteeism; and the possible solutions to the vices in Universal Secondary Education Schools in Uganda. The study applied a descriptive cross sectional research design. The study also employed both quantitative approaches/methods. Data was collected using secondary and primary source. Secondary sources consisted of publications, reports and literature related to students’ absenteeism which primary data was collected using questionnaires and interviews. The collected data was analyzed using descriptive statistics from the study population of one thousand (1000) constituting a sample of 278 respondents which 226 returned their fully completed questionnaires giving a response rate at 8l.3%, obtained from 04 out of 03 USE schools in district USE schools respectively. The study findings showed that; lack of scholastic requirements, household work, lack of interest in education, hunger at school/lack of mid-day meals, sexual harassment at school, long distance to school, illness or diseases, loss of parent or close relative, peer influence, and harsh punishment at school were the top ten (10) causes of students’ absenteeism is 23.l8% in day schools as compared to 3.25% in boarding schools. The mainly affected categories were; children from poor families, children living far from school, female students, orphans, disabled, male students and children living with single parent as reported by the respondents during the study. The study recommends that; parents understand their responsibility, government reduces taxes on scholastic materials/provides them free, improve the household income, the government and development partners to support school feeding programme, need to introduce open schooling system, and schools be held accountable for improving attendance, and finally, future researchers should examine the relation between the district education officers and secondary schools administration; teacher qualification and students’ academic performance and effects of students absenteeism on students’ academic/school performance.
- ItemAcademic Achievement of Secondary School Students as a Correlate Todomestic Violence in Mukono Town(Kampala International University, school of Arts with education, 2018-04) Aryatuha, HellenThis study investigated academic achievement of secondary school students as a correlate to domestic violence in Mukono town. This was after the realization that there was a strong relationship between academic achievement and domestic violence. The effects of domestic violence on educational achievement are real and cannot be underestimated. Domestic violence negatively affects the victims, their peers and the whole society. Exposure in primary school to a higher proportion of peers from families affected by domestic violence negatively affects their secondary school completion, college enrollment and degree attainment while reporting of domestic violence has a strong effect on peer academic achievement and violence that has not been reported has significant negative effects on peers. The study was guided by the following specific objectives: to find out the causes ofdomestic violence in Mukono town; and to examine how domestic violence affects academic achievement in Mukono town. To achieve these objectives, the study was guided by the following research questions: what causes of domestic violence in Mukono town? How does domestic violence affect academic achievement in Mukono town? The study design took the form ofa case study design that involved an in-depth and holistic study of academic achievement of secondary school students as a correlate todomestic violence in Mukono town. The study also involved purposive sampling in which the data sought were qualitative. A sample of50 respondents was selected for the study. The sample included politicians, government and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) officials, students. activists, academics, mothers, teachers, educationists and opinion leaders. The data were collected using interviews and observations for primary data and documents analysis for secondary data. Data analysis began with the editing ofthe data oferrors. This was then folldwed by the qualitative analysis of the data. This involved the literal description and narration of the emerging issues out of which authentic conclusions were made. The study found out that the causes of domestic violence in Mukono town were cultural, social, economic and psychological tictors deeply rooted in society. The study also found out that domestic violence affects academic achievement in Mukono town by negatively impacting on the physical, mental, emotional, social and economic strength of a student. The study concludes by noting that domestic violence in Mukono town will for the years to come persist not until the causes that are deeply rooted in the psyche of society are addressed
- ItemAdministrative problems encountered by public primary school head teachers in Kalamba Division, Nzaui District Kenya.(Kampala International University.College of Education, 2009-04) Japhet, Musau NdoloThe purpose of this research study was to investigate and examine the problems encountered by primary school head teachers during their day-to-day work of administering primary schools in Kalamba Division. The objectives of the study were to identify the kind of administrative problems encountered by public primary school head teachers, determine whether administration problems have any effect on the academic performance of pupils, and to suggest ways on how such problems can be solved/ addressed. The methods used for data collection were questionnaires to the head teachers. The questionnaire was divided in to two paits. Part one of the questionnaire was used to gather demographic data of respondents such as age, professional qualification, academic qualification, and administration experience. Part two gathered information on the administrative problems encountered by the head teachers. The study discovered head teachers identified lack of enough teachers, lack of sufficient facilities, lack of enough funds, frequent transfer of teachers with out replacement, lack of adequate training to handle financial management and high rate of illiteracy among parents among others. The study recommended that more teachers should be employed by the Ministry of Education Science and Technology in order to ease the problem of lack of enough teachers, the Ministry of Education Science and Technology should ensure that the grant-in-aid given to the primary schools reach in time. This will help in solving the problem of unnecessary delay to buy materials for the schools and there should be intensification of seminars, workshops, and refresher courses on financial management for head teachers and their deputies. This will help in solving the problem of financial management.

- ItemAdult Education and the Socio-Cultural Development of Women in Kjra Sub County, Wakiso District in Uganda(Kampala International University,College of Education, Open, Distance And E-Learning, 2012-09) Mukalurangwa , SpeciozaThe study on the adult education on the Socio-cultural Development of Women” was carried out in Kira sub county, Wakiso district in Uganda with a view to explore the contribution of adult education to the socio-cultural status of women, problems experienced in adult education and the possible solutions the problems experienced. A descriptive survey design was used using interview guide administered to a sample of 90 respondents who were purposively selected. It was established that, adult education has made women closer to their children, it has reduced the level of women;s dependency on men, and has provided literacy skills as well as the income generating opportunities. The programme however encounters a number of problems such as some women having a negative attitude towards it, insufficient time and resources in the monitoring and evaluation process. However, solutions such as sensitizing women on the benefits of adult education, and involving other stakeholders such as religious leaders, civic leaders, were suggested to solve the problems.

The study was guided by specific objectives that included; identifYing the different agricultural methods employed in Kerio division, to find out the effects of agricultural methods used on the environment and to suggest possible solutions of preserving the environment most through improving the farming methods. The study of a sample survey and cross-sectional study designs based on quantitative and qualitative data design. Secondary data were also sought through documentary analysis. Qualitative data were gathered through questionnaires. A sample population of eight (80) represented a target population of 800,000 people in the areas. These respondents were selected from villages that included; Nasokol Ndalu Tartar Kapchonge .the study's demographic nature considered the sex, marital status, levels of education, work experience, and the age groups of the respondents. The major agricultural practices used are; pastoralism, mixed farming, fallowing and shifting cultivation. The major positive effects include; formation of food, lead to rainfall formation, soil formation, refreshing air, formation of medicine, preservation of soil and conservation of natural resources. The following are the major negative effects; drought and famine, water scarcity, soil erosion, and soil exhaustion. The major solutions include; sensitizing the people, use of manure, formation demonstration firms, and provision of subsided farm implements. i
- ItemAnalysis on school dropouts in Machakos District Eastern Province of Kenya(Kampala International University, College of Education, Open and Distance Learning, 2011-11) Kivuva, Ndanu; Caroline, CarolineThe study topic was analysis on school dropouts in Machakos district of Eastern province of Kenya. The study was guided by the following specific objectives: to investigate the causes of school dropouts in Machakos district, to establish the effects of school dropouts in Machakos district and to establish strategies to curb school dropout cases. A case study design was used and the study was a cross section survey which involved head teachers, parents and students of selected schools who gave a detailed account of their views with regards to the cases of school dropouts in Machakos district. The researcher used both qualitative and quantitative methods of research. Interviews and questionnaires were the tools used and both primary and secondary sources of data were used and formed part of this research. The findings reveal that the major causes of school dropout are poverty, drug abuse, family problems and unwanted pregnancies. The effects of school dropout as identified are joblessness, increase in crime rate, as well as poverty and underdevelopment. Appropriate strategies have been suggested to curb the phenomenon of school dropout. Some of these include involvement by the government by offering more bursaries, girls who drop out of school should be given a second chance to continue after delive1y. The researcher gave the following recommendations, guidance and counseling, public awareness, the government should offer more bursaries and other financial assistance and finally the government should intervene on the issue of students joining businesses. From the findings, the researcher concluded that the problem of school dropout is still a big problem in Machakos district with many students dropping out each year. Education being a key to development and to the ability of a country to keep up with the first moving technological change, it 1s of paramount importance that this problem be discouraged.
- ItemAn appraisal of the resources for the implementation of free primary education programme in selected public primary schools in masinga division, masinga district, Kenya(Kampala International University.College Of Education, 2011-08) MONICA, MUINDEThe study was concerned with appraisal of resources for the implementation of free primary education programme in selected Public primary schools in MasingaDivision Masinga District in Kenya” the study was guided by three objectives; establishing the profile of the respondents, the level of resources for implementing FPE, establishing the relationship between the level of resources in urban and rural primary schools. Using descriptive survey research design, the study employed a sample of 142 respondents. The study found out that the level of resources for implementing free primary education is satisfactory. The study further found out that the level of resources in urban primary schools is higher than in rural schools. The study suggested that there should be an increase in the number of human resources in the region and that physical resources also be boosted in the region so as to effectively implement FPE programme. Further research should also be done on the availability of learning resources and the performance of pupils in FPE schools in Masinga sub region, Kenya

There are direct and opportunity costs of education which have strong negative effects on female educational opportunities. The purpose of this study was to assess the factors influencing perfmmance of girl child education in relation to access, participation and completion rates in central division Kitui district. The objectives of the study were be to; dete1mine the influence of socio-economic factors such as poverty, direct and opportunity costs of schooling on girl child education performance. Analyze the effect of geographical location of a school to girl child perfmmance in education. Analyze the effect of influence of socio-cultural factors such as early marriages and priority given to girls' future roles as mothers on girl child education performance. Analyze the influence of school factors such as exclusion, avoidance and maginalization on girl child perfmmance in education. Determine the influence of political factors such as inadequate public support and unclear policies on girl child performance and suggest promising interventions to promote female education. The study sought to bring out the current state of knowledge on the socio-economic, socio-cultural, school and political factors influencing female participation in education. The study adopted a survey research method. target population was 246 teachers, and 1487 students (DEO' S staff records for secondary schools Kitui District, 2008). The sample included all the 25 headteachers and 150 students. The researcher used questionnaires to collect data. Both qualitative analyses descriptive statistics involving tabulations, graphs and percentages was used to analyze the data. The findings were presented in terms of tables and charts and discussions of the findings after every pictorial presentation. A sUlllffiary, conclusion and recommendations with suggestion for further diagnostic research were made.

Frequency tables, bar graph and pie chart were used to assemble and analyze the raw data in percentages. The data analysis explains hearing aid to learners with hearing impairment, case: provision and barriers to effective use of hearing aids in Nairobi Kenya. The research findings are that the major barriers to effective provision and use of hearing aids are unaffordable, lack of adequate training and maintenance and lack of adequate information of where and how to get fitted with a hearing aid. Therefore, there is need for the government and all the stakeholders to alleviate the issue of hearing aid to learners with hearing impairment in Nairobi Kenya

- ItemAssessment of management skills of educational administrators and managers towards services delivered by teachers in Makindye Division, Kampala, Uganda(Kampala International University, College of Education, Open and Distance Learning, 2013-11) Ndagyize RobertThe purpose of this study was to assess management skills of educational administrators and managers towards services delivered by teachers in Makindye Division, Kampala, Uganda. This study was carried out in Makindye Division southeastern corner of the city, bordering Wakiso District to the south and west. The objectives of the study were; to find out the challenges being encountered by teachers in secondary schools, to investigate the strategies to overcome the challenges encountered by teachers in secondary schools and to investigate the effects of management skills on the performance of teachers in secondary schools. Both quantitative and qualitative data collection approaches were applied. The population of study included principal of education, heads of departments, administrators, teachers, head, teachers, and deputy and head teachers. Self-administered questionnaires with both open and close-ended Questions were employed used for data collection. Challenges encountered by teachers in secondary schools included high work load, inadequate funding, lack of necessary trainings, teacher deployment, disruptive students and disadvantaged children. Formation of quality assurance and monitoring teams, offering of financial incentives, development of curricular to promote relevant learning, collaboration among teachers, supervision, support and guidance, gender sensitivity in recruitment and transparent management practices were some of the proposed strategies to overcome the challenges encountered by teachers in secondary schools. The effect of management skills on performance of teachers was found out to be in various ways for instance high rate of labor turnover, gender disparities, high rate of absenteeism, overcrowded classes and unmanageable classes, disparities in class size and rural-urban disparities. It was recommended that the government should be made aware that although inclusive policies and legislation are in place, they are not supported by adequate funding and resources. Implementation of these policies requires extra teachers, support staff, resources, equipment, technology or a reduction in class sizes.
