- ItemAcademic performance and epileptic learners in inclusive setting in Migori zone, Migori district Kenya(Kampala International University, College of Education Open and Distance Learning, 2009-04) Amolo, Priscah AkinyiThis research was designed to investigate the academic performance of learners with epilepsy in inclusive setting in Migori Zone - Migori District - Kenya. The research was done in sampled schools across the zone. The finding of the research was as below; i. That children with epilepsy had children with epilepsy can learn alongside their peer with no epilepsy, most schools visited had children with epilepsy, which indicated that children with epilepsy get access to regular schools. ii. Most teachers have handled learners with epilepsy but with a lot of challenges. iii. Learners with epilepsy need a lot of care. That learners with epilepsy are capable and have the ability to learn given appropriate support and guidance. iv. Even though learners with epilepsy do not compete favorably with their peers with no epilepsy, they should be allowed opportunity to participate in curricular and co-curricular activities within the school and community so that they too realize their potentials as useful members of the society and to prepare them for future adult roles. v. There is need to train teachers on how to handle, manage and teach learners with epilepsy successfully. Teachers would then see the used to remediate lessons, vary teaching methods and even develop individualized education programme (I.E.P). vi. Epilepsy is mainly caused by brain damage due to trauma, accidents and a few cases through heredity and diseases such as meningitis and cerebral malaria. vii. Teachers should handle challenging issues regarding causes prevention and management of epilepsy. viii. Teachers should be encouraged to accommodate learners with epilepsy in their classrooms to avoid learners being over-dependent on others, be tolerant to the learners and allow more time to learners to complete activity.

SI)calcific Objectives of the study were; (1) To investigate the relationship between children living with single parents and poor performance, (2) investigate the relationship between children living with single parents and emotional stress, (3) Investigate the relationship between children living with single parents and dropping out of school find (4) Investigate the relationship between children living with single parents and delinquent behavior, The methods used for data collection were questionnaires to the teachers and focus group discussions with the parents. The findings revealed that children from single parent families were likely to drop out of school, perform poorly in school, have emotional stress involved in delinquent behaviors, The study recommended; that; The government and policy makers should take into consideration the problems of children living with single parents. The single parents should also be counseled on social needs of their children Sc) that their academic work will not suffer at school. Children and their parents should be counseled together to help both the child and the parent.
- ItemAn assessment of academic performance in primary mathematics of Kamariny zone, Keiyo District of Kenya a research report presented in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree in Bachelor of Education(Kampala International University,College of Education, 2007-12) Benjamin, K. ToroitichKamariny zone is in Kamariny division of Keiyo district in Rift Valley Province of Kenya. There has been a successive decline of mathematics performance in this Kamariny academic zone year —in-year-out for the last five years. Researchers have been silent over this deterioration yet mathematics stems key combinations for secondary, higher academic courses and the day to day social-economic activities of the community. If mathematics performance continues deteriorating it implies that the country will not effectively participate and succeed in modern technology as either a potential consumer or producer. The objectives of the study were to investigate, analyze and determine the assessment and academic performance of mathematics in Kamariny zone. Study guide and questionnaires to respondent for acquiring information were given to 4 Head teachers, pupils, zonal inspector, centre tutor (TAC Tutor), 10 parents and any literate persons were served with questionnaires. The non-literate persons were verbally interviewed using the interview guides for facilitating the required information. Other specimen from the study environment were photocopied or extracted with the institutions agreements. Collected data was analyzed using frequency tables, graphs and written recommendation. The findings of this study have clearly confirmed that mathematics has been poorly performed in the zone in comparison with other subjects assessed in all levels I-Ill, IVVII and VIII. Mathethatics at national level assessment KCPE was the least scored 53.35% compared to science which was 55.49%. When compared for the five years from 2002-2006performance has been reducing yearly from 63% in2002 to 53.35% in2006. Exams are set locally within the school, zonal level, divisional, district and national level and managed within the same. The frequency of administering these examinations differs in each school increasing from lower and highest being in class VIII. The majority of the parents are farmers who are 55%, employed 25%, business or self- employed 17% and others 3%. Assessment is an important core instrument which patrols promising development of learning in schools, Kamariny zone and Kenya at large . - ItemAssessment of parents support and academic performance of the mentally retarded children in Sango Primary School, Rift Valley Province, Transnzoia District, Kenya(Kampala International University, College of Education, Open and Distance Learning, 2010-08) Kandie, Lydia SamcheThis study examined the effect of parent's involvement in education on the academic performance of the mentally retarded children in public primary schools of Kenya specifically the study intended to: determine whether cultural beliefs among the parents affects the enrolment of mentally retarded children in the zone; determine whether the parents teach their mentally retarded children adaptive skills; To establish whether the parents of mentally retarded children play their role effectively as far as the education of their children is concerns and to find out whether the parents understand and appreciate the importance of taking their mentally retarded children for assessment The employed the use of descriptive approach. This means that the researcher described the data or the findings using both qualitative and quantitative approaches. The target population in this study was all the parents and teachers of mentally retarded children in the zone. Two parents of mentally retarded and teachers from each school constituted the sample selected using non probabilistic method The major findings from the study was that cultural beliefs, negligence, lack of sensitization and lack of technical skills among the parents and the teachers are the major cause of Low enrolment of mentally retarded children in the Zone. The study recommended that parents and the siblings should appreciate their little achievement in order to boost their morale. They should be allowed to socialize and interact with their peers. They should provide simulative home environment. They should give them an opportunity to learn through special education. This means that the parents should play their role effectively. Teachers of mentally retarded children should use a mortified curriculum to accommodate the interest of these children. They should provide an enrich and friendly environment to attract such learners. Those teachers who have not under-gone special training should go for in service where they will learn new skills of how to handle these learners. They should take them for assessment.
- ItemAn assessment of teachers motivation and academic performance of primary school pupils in Chapchap Zone, Baringo District, Kenya(Kampala International University; College of Education Open and Distance Learning, 2010-04) Kipturmet, RealTo assess the relationship between teachers motivation and academic performance of pupils in primary schools in Chapchap zone and suggest possible solutions to curb the problem. All secondary sources viewed relevant to this study were revisited and this helped the researcher get a clear picture of what the entire study was to entail. A descriptive design was employed in the study since the entire study was about a description of an event or scenario. Questionnaires served as the main instruments of the study and after collecting data from the respondents, such data were sorted, coded, analyzed and presented in tables. The findings from the study revealed that there was a relationship between motivation and teachers performance. Recommendations were made which called for improved and increment in human capital investment as this could be the only way of having an improvement in the academic performance of learners.

- ItemThe causes and effects of domestic violence on academic performance of pupils in primary schools: a case study of Makindye Division, Kampala District(Kampala International University, College Of Education, Open,Distantance And E-Learning, 2013-08) Amwesiga, HillaryThis study is aimed at finding out the causes and effects of domestic violence on academic performance of pupils in primary schools in Makindye Division in Kampala district, western Uganda. This study was directed by objectives and these include: To identify different forms of domestic violence in Makindye Division, To identify the causes of domestic violence and family instability among the people of Makindye Division, To establish the effects of domestic violence on family welfare in Makindye Division and to establish measures taken to reduce domestic violence in Makindye Division. The study was descriptive where stratified sampling was used to select population. It employed a total of 80 respondents as in chapter four. Data were analysed and presented using statistical methods of data presentation where percentages were integrated into tables. It was found out that there are effects of domestic violence on family affairs. There is a multiplicity of factors that lead to domestic violence. Among the factors discovered were; alcohol, lack of proper communication channel, unbalanced gender power, sexual demands, unfaithfulness. Among the recommendations given were, the need to provide lunch to pupils and students as well as teachers, the need for the government to act accordingly in order to reduce domestic violence and the people causing it to be punished and the community to socialize its members with their beliefs, values, knowledge, customs and norms of domestic violence.

The study aims at establishing the relationship between Drug abuse and academic performance. The researcher adopted a qualitative technique and used a cross sectional descriptive survey. The population of 32 respondents was selected to key respondents of learners and 10 staff, was selected to bring out their objective views, opinions and judgments of the causes and likely effects of drug abuse. The study incorporated purposive random sampling as this method was systematic, simple and with this the researcher believed that she achieved her intended objectives. The sample size, constituted of 32 respondents/ subjects of which 22 were given questionnaires and 10 responded to the interview. The research instruments used included interview guides, checklists, various types of tabular formats along with semi structured interview guides, focused group discussions and documentary analyzed by means of themes, comparative tables and category and rank analysis matrices.

The study had three objectives; to determine the level of discipline of~ measure the level of academic performance of students; to find out if there is a significant relationship between the level of discipline and academic performance. The research was conducted in Bushenyi District. It employed descriptive research design. Instruments were questionnaires, interview guides and observation check list. Five schools were selected. Data was collected and analyzed both quantitatively and qualitatively. Findings shows that the better the discipline the better the academic performance in English language.
- ItemDrug abuse and students' academic performance. a case study of four selected schools in Ileho division of Kakamega east district.(Kampala international international: College of Education, open and distance learning, 2010-04) Carolyne, R.W.WanjalaDrug and substance abuse is a fast growing problem causing concern to everybody in the education sector because of its negative impact on school students. It is out of this concern that this research is being conducted to find out the effect of the drug and substance use on secondary students. Research finding will also establish the most prevalent drugs abused in the selected school that will be generalized to form a view of what happens in other schools. Results will be generalized to give a broader perspective of what happens in schools and will provide a baseline data to the school administration in coming up with remedial measures aimed at impeding the progress of this seemingly ever unending problem among the youth. The study will use systematic random and purposive sampling technique. Students from the day school have a wider interaction with outside environment hence learn from it. Boarding school present a unique sample because truant behavior and drug abuse are very common phenomenon yet these girls and boys do not have a lot of interaction with the outsiders. The major concern is how do and where do they get drugs and substances that they use? The study population will comprise 79 students selected from form 1 to form 4 in each school, two teachers will be sampled; a guidance and counseling teacher purposively sampled and any other teacher randomly selected from each school. The researcher will use questionnaires to collect data from students and teachers. A questionnaire will be a suitable data collection instrument because each respondent will complete it himself/herself. It is possible to assure oneself that each respondent answered exactly the same questions and that the results are strictly comparable from one respondent to another. Data will be analyzed using both inferential and descriptive statistics. Data will be summarized in graphs, proportions and frequency tables.
- ItemEducational barriers and academic performance of physically handicapped learners in Bondo district, Kenya.(Kampala International University, College of Education, Open and Distance Learning, 2009-04) Onyango Okuku, HenryComparatively the number of physically handicapped learners enrolled in the regular schools is still low yet every effort is being made to increase the number. The researcher wanted to find out whether various educational barriers hinder their academic achievements or not. In order to do this study the researchers embarked on a descriptive survey kind of research. He tested two variables that is educational barrier (attitudes, facilities teaching methods learning environment) against another variable called academic performance. The researchers targeted Bondo districts in Kenya which had 236 schools. For efficiency he singled out Usigu division which had 39 schools, 240 teachers and 7800 pupils and 39 head teachers By random sampling he selected 60 teachers, 240 pupil and 15 Head teachers. Then he used the following strata for the selected 15 schools. Schools near the lakes 5, schools in urban setting 3 and schools from the interior 7. Questionnaires were used in the study and both male and female pupils were randomly selected from std. 6 to 8. Questionnaires were sent to schools. From the responses it emerged that teachers had negative attitude towards these learners, there were no suitable learning facilities, the learning facilities were not yet well modified and the teachers were; also not yet weir trained to the capacity to handle these learners. The researchers' recommendations were that a lot of sensitization should be augmented in order to remove stigma and enhance positive attitudes.
- ItemEffect of child domestic work on students academic performance: case study of Chemange Seed Sec School, Benet Subcounty, Kween District(Kampala International University, School of Education, 2018-09) Chebet, PhilimonEducation is the key element in the prevention of child domestic work at the same time child domestic work is one of the main abstracts of education at the basic level. Child domestic work has assumed alarming proportion of the world over and most especially in the developing world. Literature indicates that child domestic work is the main obstacle of human resource development which is the necessary ingredient of National Development understanding the intei~lay between education and child domestic work will help to eliminate it and improve our school environment, the survey of child domestic work examines child domestic work and student’s academic performance in Benet sub-county. The case study method will be used in the study because of its relevance’s in contemporary developmental issues like child domestic work. Systematic sampling will be used to select the households and schools who are interviewed. The study will rely on data gathered from the secondary sources and primary data from the field to do the analysis. The results of the study indicate child domestic work is considered as a normal practice and indeed healthy to the property upbringing of the child. Children working on family firms and with family enterprises are seen as part of the process of by which they are trained towards adulthood. The reasons given by the heads of households surveyed for allowing their children to work were categorized into tbrms and they as follows:- To support fhmily income, as a form of child training, to support child education and to help in household enterprises. The results of the survey show that all children in ages 5- 1 7years of household surveyed in the study at least do household chores. In all there are (675) children in this age bracket of’ the household surveyed. Most of’ them apart from household chores also work to assist their parents during rainy season. International N.G.Os such as child compassion and FAWE in the study area are sensitizing girls on their rights including their rights to education the activities of some of’ this N.G.Os according some beneficiaries have impacted positively on their education since they no longer depend on their parents lbr school fees and unifhrms. There are no specific programs by the district assemblies to fight the child domestic work problem though the officials admit child domestic work exist in Benet sub-county. The study will make a number of recommendations including the following; improving the local economy, tackling the broader socio-cultural and economic situation of farmers, increasing access, quality and relevance of education, motivating teachers to give their best, embarking on family planning campaigns, extension of social amenities to the area and making and enforcing laws on child domestic work. With the knowledge of what pertains on the ground about child domestic work will help to improve education if suggestions are factored into plans for the ai’ea.
- ItemThe effect of discipline on the academic performance of pupils in the selected primary schools of Kithiani Division, Machakos District Kenya(Kampala International University, College of Education, Open and Distance Learning, 2009-11) David, Phyllis; M.The major purpose of the study was to investigate the effects discipline and academic performance of the pupils in the selected schools of Kithiani Division, Machakos District, Kenya. The specific objectives of the study were to investigate the relationship between indiscipline and performance of pupils, investigate the causes of indiscipline in schools to establish solutions to the problem of indiscipline in Kithiani Division. The instruments used for data collection were questionnaires to the teacher and focused group discussion with the pupils. The findings indicated that that pupils perform well in class. The respondents named poverty, lack of parental guidance, emotional stress and joining gang groups. Lastly the solutions to the problem of school discipline were investigated and results reveal that suspensions and punishments are the most effective. School authorities and teachers should identify the reasons for children's misbehavior and therefore deal with the problem. Relative of the pupils and teachers should work hand in hand to discipline pupils. Guardians should realize that they play a bigger part in disciplining their children. Effective and less violent means of disciplining children should be devised.
- ItemThe effect of free primary education programme and academic performance of pupils of KCPE in public primary schools: case study of Kirriti region, Nyandurua district, Kenya(Kampala International University, College of Education, Open and Distance Learning, 2010-05) Sanga Chemeli, ElizabethThe study dwelled into the impact of free primary education on the academic performance of pupils in KCPE in public schools with the aim of determining the causes of poor performance, current learning conditions and the extent to which free primary education has affected the performance of pupils. The study was carried out in Kiriita location, nyandarua District and it utilized the head teachers of the six schools in that location, 46teachers and 124 pupils of the same schools. The findings of the study were sought to be beneficial to various people; policy makers, head teachers educatio11 officers and the government. The study based the work of other people which was in relation to the study. The explanatory design was employed and a researcher made questionnaire was administered to collect the intended information. The information attained from the field was analyzed using Microsoft excel and presented in form tables and graphs. The study attained several findings; there was no significant relationship between free primary education and academic performance of pupils, there decreasing levels of staffing, the administration is inefficient as a result of overwhelming number of pupils and the resultant fatigue, The teacher to pupil's ratio also deteriorated over the same period to that effect and basing on the finding, the researcher had recommendations; Hire more teachers, especially younger staff to avoid a possible staffing crunch due to mass retirement, Improve infrastructure especially in rural schools to ease access for inspection by education officers, sufficient funding should be availed. The researcher also suggested areas for further research like, levels of staffing in free primary education and academic performance of students, the competence of teacher in free primary education and the academic performance of students and motivation of teachers in free primary education and academic performance of students.

- ItemEffect of HIV/AIDS on academic performance of secondary school students in Kabarole District. a case study of Kibiito Sub-county.(Kampala International University, College/School of Education, 2019-04) Nanfumba, DanielThe effect of HIV/AIDS on secondary school students in Kibiito sub-county Kaborole district. The research adopted a case study design targeting a number of 4 schools. The Centre has four secondary schools both public and private. The researcher employed purposive sampling technique. The data was then analyzed using percentages, pie charts, tables, bar graphs and frequency distribution techniques using SPSS Version 16. The study established that Students with HIV/AIDS have challenges ranging from absenteeism occasioned by their attendance to medical care as well as caring for their aging and ailing parents. This eventually forces them to drop out of school when their parents die. The study recommends that Students living with HIV/AIDS should be supported by the government through provision of free secondary school education to ease the burden on parents. Child headed families should be eradicated by identii~ing orphans and initiating consultation development funds to help them with bursaries to reducepoverty.

- ItemThe effect of women leadership in academic performance of Kenya certificate of primary education in Limuru division Kiambu district, Kenya(Kampala International University, College of Education,Open and distance Learning, 2008-04) Njoroge, Stella WambuiThe aim of this study was to find out the effects of women leadership on the performance of KCPE in public primary schools in Limuru Division of Kiambu District. Limuru Division is always ranked among the best divisions in the district followed by Kikuyu, Githunguri and Tigoni. Most of the schools in this division, are headed by women, hence the researcher was interested in finding out whether their leadership would be having any effects on the performance of the school and more so in the final exams. The researcher developed research questions to gather information of the study. One study found that the school headed by female head teacher were well organized in all aspects of administration and concluded that the school performed well because the female head teachers used democratic leadership. This influenced performance in individual subjects and particularly in languages. The study also recommended that the ministry of education needs to encourage use of democratic leadership in the management of school to enhance performance. This should be done by both male and female head teachers.
