    The role of parents on pupils’ academic performance in public primary schools in Bubaare Sub Country, Mbarara District, Uganda

    Purpose: This study sought to examine the relationship between role of parents and pupils academic performance in public primary schools in Bubaare sub county Mbarara District. Objectives: The study had the following objectives; to investigate the influence of parent‟s participation in school meetings, assess the influence of parent payment of facilitation fees and examine the influence of parents‟ provision of scholastic materials on pupils‟ academic performance in public primary schools in Mbarara District. Methodology: A cross sectional survey design was adopted for this study. The study focused on 121 participants including teachers, SMC & PTA, and representatives from the Ministry of Education and Sports and School administrators out of 154 total population.in Bubaare Sub County Mbarara District. A sample of 121 respondents was determined using the table of Krejcie & Morgan (1970). This study employed both quantitative and qualitative methods of data collection that included the questionnaire and interviews. Quantitative data was analyzed using SPSS unlike qualitative data was analyzed using descriptive statistics like frequencies, proportions, means, standard deviations, and Pearson's correlation coefficient shall be employed, as well as inferential statistics. Findings: From the findings, majority of the teaching staff (67.8%) agreed with the statement that “parents show love to their children”. Responses on the statement, “Parents participate in meetings every year”, were as follows; 75% (45) of the respondents agreed with the statement, 11.7% (7) were not sure and 13.4% (8) of the respondents disagreed with the statement while mean was 3.87 and standard deviation was 1.142 which means that majority of respondents agreed with the statement since mean was above 3.0. The findings shows adjusted R2 value of 0.320 between parents‟ participation in meetings and academic performance which is suggesting that parenting alone predicted 32% (0.320 * 100) of the variance in academic performance. Conclusions: This study concluded that good learning environment positively influences academic performance. This study concluded that schools are not providing enough learning materials. Recommendations: The researcher recommended that parents should ensure that their children get balanced diet. The researcher also recommended that parents regularly should check on their children‟s discipline and should not wait when their children are suspended from school.
